Pueblo Walleye Tournament Recap

Pueblo Reservoir was the location for the second tournament of year and as usual, the lake produced many walleyes for the 34 teams that competed.  Water levels are much higher than normal and it proved to make the lake a challenge for most of the anglers.  Fish were scattered with many holding in deeper water 30 – 35’ deep.  Some were found shallow hiding in brush waiting to ambush prey and a few teams took advantage of this by pitching jigs to trigger attacks.  Live bait was the most widely used method with many teams jigging with crawlers and leeches and others using lindy rigs to catch their fish.  The biggest challenge was going through enough fish to find 5 keeper size fish to weigh.  Saturday morning teams launched their boats and staged out in front of the North Marina and took part in the National Anthem.  Because everyone was inspected and on the water early, the decision was made to take off early to get down to business.  Pat Sutphen with Canon Marine, in a beautiful 2015 Lund 219 Pro V was the Official Starter.  One by one, in a trickle start fashion the teams got on plane heading for their spots.  The weigh station opened at 3:30pm and teams came in with their days catch.  Finishing day one in third place with 10.19lb. limit was the father and son team of Bob and Dan Giordano.  Mike Williams and Justin Crump brought in 5 walleyes weighing 10.29lbs. which had them sitting in second place.  The day one leaders proved again that they know how to catch walleyes and they have Pueblo dialed in as Chad Lunde and Luke Schultz brought in the heaviest basket with a total weight of 10.46lbs!  Chad and Luke also tied Collin Rupel and Shane DuBois for the JB Lures Big Fish Award on Saturday with both teams brining in fish that weighed 2.63lbs.

On Sunday, many teams were still in the hunt for the win and teams were allowed to take of early again.  The wind early in the day made boat control more difficult and the bite seemed to be slower than the day before for most, but teams still found fish willing to bite.  When teams arrived at the weigh station, the day one leaders proved they had the pattern for the weekend.  The same top three teams all put together another solid day.  Bringing in another limit weighing 10.1lbs, Dan and “Walleye Bob” Giordano finished in third place with a combined two day total of 20.29lbs.  Mike Williams and Justin Crump proved their skills and consistency by weighing 10.92lbs to finish in second with a total of 21.21lbs.  Congratulations to Chad Lunde and Luke Schultz who took the victory by bringing in the tourneys heaviest single day basket weighing 12.17lbs.  Added to their day one basket, the team weighed a total of 22.63lbs!  This is the second Pueblo tourney in a row that Chad and Luke have won as they also took the win last October in the Fall Classic.  The Sunday JB Lures Big Fish Award goes to Greg Fritz and Robert Sorenson for catching a 3.54lb. walleye which was the biggest of the tournament.  Teams had the option to sign up for the Ron Lowry Go Big Award on Sunday.  This was a way for our tournament anglers to help raise money for Ron with half of the pot going to the team that brought in the biggest fish on Sunday and the other half going to Ron.  Thank you to all 26 teams that entered.  In a generous act of kindness, after Greg and Robert won Big Fish on Sunday, they donated all of the money to Ron!  Great job guys, thank you!  Winning the Youth division, the father and son team of Donald Broeren and his son Donald Jr. brought in a two day total of 7.73lbs!  Neal Wilkinson and Kelly Abernathy weighed 3.72lbs. to take the top spot in the Mixed division.  Thank you to all teams that competed and Sandy and Brady Hewitt for their help at the weigh station.  Special thanks to Rob and Canon Marine for being our Official Start and Check In boat, we appreciate Canon Marine for their years of support to our club, they are outstanding people!  Next up, in a couple of weeks, CWA teams have a choice to fish with the Wyoming Stampede on Glendo Reservoir or to stay in Colorado and fish the Trinidad tournament.  Good luck to all!
