Fall Classic Walleye Tournament Recap

The 2015 Colorado Walleye Association Tournament season is officially in the books with the conclusion of the Fall Classic.  The 17 teams that fished the tournament enjoyed great fall weather and an awesome bite (albeit mostly non-legal sized fish).  Fish were caught in many methods including trolling, slabbing, casting, bottom bouncing, lindy rigging and jigging.  There were rumors of teams catching over 50+ walleye during the tournament.

At the end of the day the team of Chad Lunde and Luke Schultz once again showed there Pueblo prowess as they brought up the winning basket of 5 walleyes weighing in at 9.42 pounds.  They won $1150 for their day’s catch.

In second place Greg Fritz and Robert Sorenson brought in 3 walleye that weighed 5.63 pounds and brought home $700.  Greg and Robert also won the coveted Team of the Year Cups.  The Team of the Year Cups is a new award this year for the top 20 point leaders in the Team of The Year standings.  Each member of the team will receive a travelling cup with the year and their names engraved on it to be handed out at the Spring Banquet.  Ironically Greg and Robert finished 20th in the TOY point standings but that didn’t stop them from being crowned the 2015 Team of the Year Cup winners.

Coming in third place and taking home $450 was the rookie team of Jon Kaibel and David Rodriquez.  They caught two really nice walleye that weighed in at 4.64 pounds.  What a way to finish the season!

Finishing in the final payout spot of $150 was a new team of Marc Prinz and Bill McLaughlin.  They edged out Justin Jones and Barry Cundiff by less than one-tenth of a pound.  Something tells me we’ll see these two in the future.

Neil Wilkinson and Kelly Abnerathy won the Mixed Couple Division and a $25 Cabelas gift card and Drew Anderson and his daughter Jada won the Youth Division and a $25 Cabelas gift card.  The JB Big Fish was caught by the team of Pat Scott and Hank Corsentino and they won $25 of JB Lures.

Adding to the fun the board decided to extend last year’s tradition of having 4 optional side pots of Biggest Bass, Biggest Bluegill, Biggest Walleye, and a small twist this year of Biggest Other(anything other than bass, bluegill, and walleye).  Multiple teams competed in each division with the Biggest Walleye and Biggest Bluegill being the most contested.  Lonnie Snyder and Ronnie Snyder won the biggest Bass pot with a 1.77 pound small mouth.  Gene Metschke and Larry Call edged out the Snyder team for biggest bluegill with a .29 pounder.  The team of Scott Beauvais and Robert Schafer won the largest Other pot with a 6.15 pound catfish.  The team of Jon Kaibel and David Rodriquez won the largest Walleye pot with a 2.63 pounder.  Interestingly they were the only team to win a side pot as well as place in the tournament.

Big thanks to our new sponsor BlobFish for donating two pair of sunglasses to the tournament.  The sunglasses were given to Jada Anderson and Zackary Stevens our 2 youth contestants.  They looked great in their new shades!  When you have a chance check them out on our Sponsors Page.

Also a big thanks to Sandy and Brady Hewitt for all of their help during the weigh-in.  These two are always around making sure things run smoothly.

Thanks to everyone that participated this year and to all of our sponsors.  Please remember to help support our sponsors any time you can.
