Cherry Creek Walleye Tournament Recap

Cherry Creek Ice Breaker

CWA Points Tournament #1

Many of Colorado’s top walleye anglers started the 2016 CWA points season at the Ice breaker tournament at Cherry Creek Reservoir on April 23rd and 24th.  All 53 teams, made up of two anglers each, set out on Saturday morning search of the heaviest basket consisting of 5 legal walleyes.  After the National Anthem, the tournament began with a trickle start at 7:00am.  Teams used a variety of methods to catch the elusive walleyes.  Many teams trolled crank baits behind leadcore line in the deep basin of the lake.  Others used blade baits and jigs to entice strikes.  At 3:00pm the weigh station opened and the first flight arrived with their catch.  When all teams had weighed, the team of Boe Kampbell and Scott Wilson were sitting in Third Place with 13.67lbs.  Finishing in Second Place on day one was the husband and wife team of Nate and Mandi Zelinsky with 14.83lbs. Nate and Mandi, big fish specialists, proved their angling skills and knowledge by also winning Saturdays Big Fish Award with a beautiful 8.29lb giant!  Taking First Place on day one was Brad Qualley and Mitch Petersen with 14.86lbs.  The team hooked up with a 28” piggy, followed by a 24”er and a 19” to take top honors.

On Sunday, the weather cooperated again and the teams went out in reverse order at 7:00am.  Many teams had a tougher time finding their fish.  The tactics were basically the same, with many teams sticking to trolling on the bottom.  Finishing in Third Place on Sunday was long time CWA member Emile Van Hoye and his partner Millie Weiss.  The mixed team brought in a great basket weighing 10.55lbs.  Keith McClarney and Eric Wolgram showed up at the weigh station with an 11.02lb basket which was heavy enough for Second Place on Sunday.  Winning day two, the father and son team of Bill and John Mueller did it again with 11.57lb basket of walleye gold!  Taking Sunday’s Big Fish Award was the father and son team of Donald Broeren Sr. and Donald Broeren Jr. with a 5.75lb. marble eye!

The Muellers prove year after year that they are the team to beat at Cherry Creek as they put two solid days together and where the overall winners for the two day tournament with a total weight of 23.09lbs!  Qualley and Petersen worked hard for only two fish on Sunday but held onto Second overall with a two day total of 19.72lbs.  Finishing in Third overall was the team of Bill Ianiro and Corey Jolly with 18.45lbs.  Congratulations to Nate and Mandi Zelinsky with a total of 14.83lbs. and winning Top Mixed Team.  Donald Broeren Sr. and Donald Jr. made great memories together and won the Youth Division with a two day total of 8.34lbs.  Fishing out of a Ranger 620 VS, the Muellers also win The Ranger Cup by bringing in the most weight of any team fishing out of a Ranger Boat!

Thank you to all the folks at Cherry Creek State Park for helping make our first tournament of the year so smooth, fun and successful.  Thank you to all the volunteers that helped with boat inspections, the starter and check in boats and all who helped set up and take down the weigh station!  Special thanks to Sandy and Brady Hewitt for their help at the weigh station, the process wouldn’t be organized and smooth without you!  And finally, thank you to all the teams that competed, it’s great to see old friends, meet new ones and share our passion to catch walleyes together!
